Thinking about LASIK? Your first step should be a consultation with a trusted local optometrist — not a LASIK chain. Dr. J.C. Mungar provides independent LASIK candidacy assessments, pre-operative care, and post-operative follow-up so you have an experienced local partner throughout the entire process.
LASIK surgery centres are excellent at performing the procedure itself, but they are not designed for the ongoing relationship, the thorough pre-surgery investigation, or the post-surgery monitoring that ensures the best outcome. Your optometrist knows your eye history, your baseline prescription, and your corneal health in a way that a surgical referral centre cannot replicate from a single pre-op visit.
Dr. Mungar has helped many Oakville patients prepare for LASIK surgery and provided their follow-up care after the procedure. He works independently of any specific LASIK provider — which means his recommendations are based entirely on what’s best for your eyes, not on a referral arrangement.
LASIK is not suitable for everyone. During your consultation, Dr. Mungar will assess:
If LASIK is not suitable, Dr. Mungar can discuss alternatives including PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) or implantable collamer lenses (ICL).
Dr. Mungar conducts a thorough pre-operative assessment including prescription verification and a review of your ocular and medical history. He will advise you on candidacy, help you choose a reputable LASIK surgeon, and prepare your surgical referral documentation.
Your follow-up visits take place right here in Oakville at 135 Lakeshore Road West. Dr. Mungar sees you the day after surgery, at one week, at one month, and as needed thereafter — verifying your visual acuity, assessing corneal healing, and monitoring for any signs of under- or over-correction.
Dr. Mungar is not affiliated with any specific LASIK provider. His recommendation is based entirely on your candidacy and what’s best for your eyes — not on a referral relationship with a particular clinic.
After LASIK, all your follow-up visits happen right here in Oakville. No need to travel back to a surgical centre for every post-op check. You see the same doctor who has known your eyes for years.
LASIK is a single event in a lifelong relationship with your eyes. Dr. Mungar continues to be your primary eye care provider for decades after surgery, monitoring your long-term eye health and addressing any new concerns.
Both reshape the cornea with a laser. LASIK involves creating a thin flap in the cornea, applying the laser, then replacing the flap. Recovery is typically 1 to 2 days. PRK removes the outer corneal surface layer entirely — healing takes 5 to 7 days but avoids the flap entirely. PRK is often preferred for patients with thinner corneas or who play contact sports. Both produce comparable long-term outcomes.
LASIK candidates are typically aged 18 to 60. Patients over 40 who have developed presbyopia may find LASIK corrects their distance vision but still requires reading glasses. Patients over 60 may be better served by refractive lens exchange. Your optometrist can help determine the most appropriate option for your age and prescription.
LASIK surgery is not covered by OHIP as it is considered elective. Some extended health plans provide a partial benefit — typically $250–$500 per eye. Medical expense tax credits may also be available. The pre-operative and post-operative optometry visits may be covered by your extended health plan; check your benefits.
Dry eye is one of the most important factors to evaluate before LASIK. Significant pre-existing dry eye can worsen after surgery. Dr. Mungar will assess your dry eye status during your consultation. In many cases, treating dry eye first — with LipiFlow or other in-office treatments available at our clinic — can make LASIK a viable option.
Before you book at a LASIK centre, book with Dr. Mungar first. An independent pre-operative assessment ensures you’re a safe candidate and means you’ll have a trusted local partner for the long-term care your eyes deserve.
