Eye Exams in Oakville, ON

Comprehensive eye care for the whole family. Dr. J.C. Mungar has provided thorough, caring eye examinations in Oakville for over 30 years — for adults, children, seniors, and patients with diabetes. Advanced diagnostic technology including OCT scanning and digital retinal imaging is available at our Lakeshore Road West clinic.

More Than Just a Prescription Check

A comprehensive eye exam at Dr. Mungar’s Oakville clinic is a thorough evaluation of your complete eye health — not just your vision sharpness. In a single visit, Dr. Mungar screens for conditions including glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and dry eye syndrome — many of which show no early warning signs.

Early detection is critical. Many serious eye diseases are far more treatable when caught before any noticeable changes to your vision occur. Regular eye exams are the single most effective tool for protecting your long-term eyesight.

What Your Eye Exam Includes

  • Visual acuity testing to assess how clearly you see at distance and near
  • Refraction to determine your current glasses or contact lens prescription
  • Intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement to screen for glaucoma
  • Slit-lamp examination of the front structures of the eye
  • Dilated fundus examination or digital retinal imaging
  • OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) scanning of the retina and optic nerve when clinically indicated
  • Screening for dry eye, macular degeneration, cataracts, and other conditions
  • Review of your medications, family history, and systemic health

Eye Exams for Every Stage of Life

Adult Eye Exams

Adults aged 20 to 64 without risk factors should have a comprehensive exam every 1 to 2 years. OHIP covers one exam per year for adults 65 and older. We recommend more frequent visits for patients with diabetes, a family history of glaucoma, or high myopia.

Children’s Eye Exams — FREE Under OHIP (Ages 0–19)

Eye exams are fully covered by OHIP for patients aged 0 to 19 at no cost to families. We recommend exams at 6 months, age 3, before starting school, and annually through the school years. Vision problems are a leading cause of learning difficulties in children — and most kids don’t know to tell you their vision is blurry.

Senior Eye Exams — OHIP Covered (Ages 65+)

Patients 65 and older are entitled to one fully covered OHIP eye exam annually. As we age, the risks of cataracts, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy all increase. Annual exams are essential at this stage of life.

Diabetic Eye Exams

Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of vision loss in working-age adults. Patients with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes should have a comprehensive dilated eye exam every year. OHIP covers one exam per 12 months for diabetic patients of any age.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I have an eye exam?

Adults aged 20–64 with no risk factors: every 1 to 2 years. Children and adults 65+: every year. Patients with diabetes, glaucoma, or a strong family history of eye disease: follow your optometrist’s specific recommendation, often annually.

Is my eye exam covered by OHIP?

OHIP covers one comprehensive exam per year for patients aged 0–19, patients aged 65+, and patients with qualifying medical conditions such as diabetes, cataracts, or glaucoma. Adults aged 20–64 without qualifying conditions are not covered by OHIP but may have coverage through extended health benefits.

How long does a comprehensive eye exam take?

A thorough eye exam typically takes 30 to 45 minutes. If dilation or OCT imaging is included, allow up to 60 minutes. We recommend not driving immediately after dilation as your vision will be temporarily blurry.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Please bring your current glasses and/or contact lenses, your OHIP card, and a list of any medications you are taking. Previous eye exam records from another optometrist are helpful but not required.
