A well-fitted pair of HD progressive lenses in a high-index material with a premium anti-reflective coating is not the same product as a standard progressive in a basic plastic lens. Traditional progressive lenses provide a corridor of clear vision for distance, intermediate (computer), and near (reading) distances. Standard designs typically have narrower corridors and more peripheral distortion, requiring more head turning to find clear zones. Suitable for patients with straightforward lifestyles and moderate prescriptions.
HD digital progressives are manufactured using free-form surfacing technology, which grinds the lens to individual specifications digitally rather than using a generic mould. The result is dramatically wider clear zones, less peripheral blur, faster adaptation for new wearers, and superior optics particularly for patients with complex prescriptions including astigmatism. HD progressives are Dr. Mungar’s recommended standard for all progressive wearers.
Varilux is the world’s leading progressive lens brand and the choice of optical professionals worldwide for patients who demand the best. The latest Varilux X-Series design reduces head movement required to find clear zones and is specifically engineered to handle the visual demands of smartphone and tablet use in addition to traditional distance and reading tasks. Designed specifically for the intermediate distance range of a desk or workstation (40 to 100 cm). A larger intermediate zone and reading zone make screen work significantly more comfortable than wearing general-purpose progressives. Highly recommended for patients who spend 4+ hours daily at a computer.
High-index materials bend light more efficiently than standard plastic, meaning the same prescription can be achieved with a significantly thinner, lighter lens. For patients with moderate to high prescriptions (typically above +/-4.00), high-index lenses reduce edge and centre thickness dramatically, making frames more comfortable to wear and far better aesthetically.
Polycarbonate is an impact-resistant material 10 times stronger than standard plastic, making it the recommended choice for children’s eyewear, sports glasses, and safety eyewear. It is inherently UV-blocking and lighter than standard plastic.
Trivex combines the impact resistance of polycarbonate with superior optical clarity, particularly for patients with astigmatism. It is slightly lighter than polycarbonate and is an excellent choice for rimless and semi-rimless frames due to its resistance to cracking under stress.
Anti-reflective coatings eliminate the reflections from the front and back surface of the lens that cause glare, halos around lights at night, and the appearance of “ghost images.” Premium AR coatings like Crizal Avance, Sapphire, and Prevencia also include smudge resistance, dust repellency, and scratch-resistance treatments. Anti-reflective coating is one of the highest-value additions to any pair of glasses, especially for nighttime driving.
Blue-light filtering lenses reduce the amount of high-energy visible (HEV) blue light reaching the eye from digital screens and LED lighting. Available as an add-on coating or incorporated into the lens material itself. Particularly recommended for patients experiencing digital eye strain or sleep disruption from evening screen use.
Photochromic lenses automatically darken in sunlight and clear indoors, providing UV protection and glare reduction without the need for a separate pair of sunglasses. If you have difficulty adapting to your new progressive lenses, bring them back. We work with you and with our lab partners to adjust the prescription or lens design until your vision is right.
Standard progressives are made using conventional surfacing from a limited range of semi-finished lens blanks. HD (free-form) progressives are individually calculated and surfaced to each patient’s exact prescription using CNC digital equipment. The result is wider, clearer vision zones, less peripheral distortion, and typically faster adaptation. For most progressive wearers, the upgrade to HD is worth the additional cost.
High-index lenses are most beneficial for prescriptions above +/-3.00 to 4.00. If you have a mild prescription, standard plastic (CR-39) often provides excellent optics at a lower cost and is not thicker or heavier to a noticeable degree. Dr. Mungar recommends the appropriate index for your prescription without automatically defaulting to the most expensive option.
For almost all patients, yes. The reduction in glare, particularly when driving at night, and the improvement in the appearance of your lenses (making them nearly invisible in photographs) make premium AR coating one of the best value additions to any pair of glasses. Premium coatings like Crizal also significantly reduce smudging and are much easier to clean than uncoated lenses.
An occupational progressive lens combined with a blue-light filtering coating and premium anti-reflective treatment is the combination Dr. Mungar most frequently recommends for heavy computer users. The occupational progressive provides a much wider intermediate zone than a standard progressive, dramatically reducing neck strain and eye fatigue during screen work.
