An ocular health exam is a thorough evaluation of the internal and external structures of the eye, beyond a standard refraction or prescription check. It assesses the health of your cornea, lens, retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels. It screens for a wide range of eye diseases, many of which cause no symptoms until significant, and sometimes irreversible, damage has already occurred.

Assessment of the eyelids, eyelashes, conjunctiva, and cornea using a slit lamp. Detects conditions including blepharitis, dry eye, pterygium, corneal scarring, and anterior chamber abnormalities.
Elevated IOP is the primary risk factor for glaucoma. We measure pressure in both eyes using Goldmann applanation tonometry, the clinical gold standard for accuracy. A single normal reading does not rule out glaucoma; IOP is interpreted alongside optic nerve appearance and other findings.
The optic nerve carries visual information from the eye to the brain. Glaucoma and other conditions damage the nerve progressively. Dr. Mungar examines the optic nerve head carefully at every exam and compares findings to previous visits to detect subtle changes over time.
OCT produces high-resolution cross-sectional images of the retina and optic nerve. It can detect structural changes from glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, and other conditions years before they affect visual acuity. OCT is performed in-office at our Oakville clinic.
Wide-field photographs document the appearance of the retina, macula, optic disc, and blood vessels in high resolution. Baseline photographs are invaluable for detecting changes at future visits. We maintain a photographic record for every patient.
Dilation of the pupils allows Dr. Mungar to examine the peripheral retina, which is not visible through an undilated pupil. Peripheral retinal conditions including tears, holes, lattice degeneration, and early detachment are detected through dilated examination.
The natural lens of the eye is inspected for clouding (cataracts) using the slit lamp. Cataract severity is documented and monitored over time. Dr. Mungar adjusts your glasses prescription to optimise your vision through early and moderate cataracts and co-manages with cataract surgeons when surgery is appropriate.
OCT imaging is available in our Oakville clinic. You receive comprehensive diagnostic imaging without needing referrals or additional appointments elsewhere.

Not necessarily. Dilation is used when a more thorough view of the peripheral retina is required, or when clinical findings warrant a dilated examination. Dr. Mungar determines when dilation is clinically indicated. Many patients benefit from dilated exams at least every few years, and more frequently if they have risk factors for retinal conditions.
Yes. The most dangerous eye diseases, including glaucoma and AMD, develop silently. Waiting until you notice a vision change is waiting until damage has already occurred. Clear vision does not mean healthy eyes. Regular ocular health exams are the only way to catch these conditions early.
