For most eye emergencies, your optometrist is the better first call — not the emergency room. Hospital ERs can address life-threatening emergencies, but they are rarely equipped with the specialized ophthalmic instruments needed to properly examine, diagnose, and treat eye conditions. An optometrist has the slit-lamp, the diagnostic tools, and the clinical training to manage most eye emergencies efficiently and appropriately.
Calling Dr. Mungar’s office first can save you hours in a hospital waiting room and get you the right care faster. If your situation requires a surgical ophthalmologist or hospital care, we will direct you appropriately — but the majority of eye emergencies can be treated right at our Oakville clinic.
If you are experiencing sudden complete vision loss, severe eye pain after injury, or penetrating eye trauma, proceed directly to the nearest emergency room or call 911.
We reserve appointment slots for urgent cases and will do our best to see you the same day you call. Don’t wait in a 6-hour ER queue for an eye condition your optometrist can treat in 30 minutes.
Dr. Mungar has the slit-lamp, the retinal imaging equipment, and over 30 years of clinical experience to properly diagnose and treat eye emergencies — a level of examination simply not available at a general ER.
If your condition requires a surgical ophthalmologist, Dr. Mungar will make the appropriate referral immediately and ensure you receive the level of care you need. You are never left without guidance.
Go directly to the ER or call 911 if you experience: sudden complete loss of vision, penetrating eye injury (something stuck in the eyeball), chemical burns from strong industrial acids, or eye trauma accompanied by head injury. For all other urgent eye concerns — infections, pain, foreign bodies, sudden floaters or flashes, or blurry vision — call us first at (905) 842-3411.
If the object is on the surface of the eye, try gentle rinsing with clean water or saline. If it doesn’t flush out after rinsing, or if you have pain and tearing that persist, call us immediately. Do not rub the eye and do not attempt to remove anything that appears embedded in the cornea or eyeball.
A red eye can have many causes ranging from minor (dry eye, mild allergy) to urgent (acute angle-closure glaucoma, corneal ulcer, iritis). Red eyes associated with significant pain, vision change, sensitivity to light, discharge, or contact lens wear should be evaluated urgently.
