Learn moreMost people only need one of the first two. If you are unsure, call the clinic and the front desk will book you into the right appointment rather than leaving you to guess.
It has been a year or more Book a comprehensive eye exam. This is the default appointment and covers vision, prescription and the health of the eye.
Something changed suddenly Call us, do not book online. New floaters, flashes, pain, redness or a drop in vision needs seeing quickly rather than at the next free slot.
It is for a child Book a children's eye exam. It is covered by OHIP to age 20 and tests things a school vision screening does not.
Your eyes burn, water or feel gritty Book a dry eye assessment. Watering eyes are usually a dry eye symptom, which surprises most people.
You want to try contact lenses Book a contact lens fitting. It is a separate appointment from an eye exam because it measures the shape of your eye, not just your prescription.
You have diabetes or glaucoma Book an annual exam and say so when you call. Your exam is covered by OHIP at any age with a qualifying diagnosis.
Most of the services above depend on the same set of instruments. A prescription can be measured with a chart and a phoropter. Detecting disease early cannot, which is why the clinic invests in imaging that shows the tissue behind the eye.
OCT scanning is offered as an optional addition to your exam rather than being part of every appointment. Where it is done, the scans are stored so each visit can be compared against the last, and that history is what turns a single reading into a trend.
OHIP funds one routine eye exam per year for anyone under 20, and one every 18 months for anyone 65 or older (every 12 months if you have a qualifying medical condition). Adults between 20 and 64 normally pay privately, with one important exception that catches a lot of people out.
If you have a qualifying medical condition, your exam is covered at any age. Diabetes, glaucoma, cataracts and retinal disease all qualify. Mention any diagnosis when you book so we can check it against the current list, and bring your extended health details if you have workplace benefits.

No, they are separate appointments. An eye exam determines your prescription and checks the health of your eyes. A fitting measures the curvature and diameter of your cornea, assesses your tear film, and trials lenses to confirm they sit correctly and stay comfortable.
If you want contacts and it has been a year since your last exam, book both. The fitting depends on a current prescription.
A comprehensive eye exam runs 30 to 45 minutes. Contact lens fittings take a similar time, sometimes with a short follow up. LipiFlow is about 12 minutes of treatment. Urgent appointments are as long as the problem requires.
Allow extra time if you plan to choose frames afterwards, since fitting and measuring is not something to rush.
Anything urgent. Something caught in the eye, an injury, sudden pain or redness, a new shower of floaters, flashes of light, or an abrupt change in vision. Call the clinic rather than booking online so we can fit you in.
For eye problems specifically, an optometrist is usually faster and better equipped than a hospital emergency department.
Routine eye exams are covered annually for patients under 20 and every 18 months for patients 65 or older (every 12 months with a qualifying condition), and at any age for patients with diabetes, glaucoma, cataracts or certain retinal conditions. Urgent and medically necessary visits are also covered.
Contact lens fittings, eyewear, dry eye treatments such as LipiFlow and BlephEx, and LASIK consultations are not OHIP funded, though many are claimable through workplace benefits.
Yes. The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends a first eye exam at six months, another at age three, one before starting school, and annually through the school years.
Children rarely report a vision problem because blurred vision is all they have known, so a school screening is not a substitute for a full exam. All of it is covered by OHIP to age 20.
Not quite. A glasses prescription and a contact lens prescription are different, because a contact lens sits directly on the eye while a spectacle lens sits about twelve millimetres in front of it. Contact lens prescriptions also specify base curve and diameter.
You can have both, they just need to be issued separately, which is why the fitting is its own appointment.
Yes. Dr. Mungar carries out the pre operative assessment, refers you to a surgeon in the GTA, then handles your post operative follow up here in Oakville rather than sending you back to a distant surgical centre for every check.
New patients are welcome and no referral is needed. Book online in under a minute, or call and we will make sure you are booked into the right service.
